What to do at security

To reduce the time spent at security, we would suggest that you be prepared before reaching the metal detector and follow the instructions shown on the screens, by taking off everything that if detected, could require a more thorough check of you and your luggage. Put the following articles in the trays provided at security: electrical/electronic items, jackets, coats, metal objects, watches, wallets, purses, keys, belts, buckles, etc. Remember that it is not permitted to wear or carry in your hand luggage objects that can be used as weapons (metal files, scissors, golf clubs, etc.), explosives or flammable, poisonous, toxic and infectious substances. A list of objects not allowed on board is displayed at the check-in desk.

Safety regulations: what liquids/fluids is it possible to take on-board?

Current European regulations restrict, but do not prohibit, liquids in hand luggage (perfumes, creams, shaving foam, cosmetics, toothpaste, etc.).
The rules prescribed by the EU regulations are mandatory, so security officers must apply them to the letter.
The new-generation EDS C3 scanners at security control in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 at Fiumicino Airport for all departing flights —except to the US or Israel— are able to detect all liquids inside your luggage.
In compliance with new European Commission regulation, liquids carried in hand luggage must be in containers with a capacity of up to 100 ml.
Therefore, during security control, you can leave containers of liquids with a capacity of up to 100 ml in your hand luggage, without having to separate them or place them in plastic bags.
Containers of liquids with a capacity exceeding 100 ml may only be carried in hand luggage if they are empty, otherwise they must be checked in as check-in luggage.
To empty containers with a capacity exceeding 100 ml (including thermos flasks) before passing through security control, you can use the emptying machines located just before security in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.
The new generation EDS C3 scanners also allow you to leave electrical and electronic devices (laptops, tablets, etc.) in your hand luggage.
For flights to the US or Israel, the security checks at Fiumicino Airport with traditional X-ray machines remain unchanged, which means that liquids (in containers of capacity of up to 100 ml) must be removed from hand luggage and placed in plastic bags of max. 1000 ml, and electrical and electronic equipment must also be removed from your hand luggage before going through security.
Exceptions to the restrictions are LAGs (Liquids, Aerosols and Gases) to be used during the trip for medical purposes or for a special dietary regime, including baby food, which may also be allowed in hand luggage in quantities exceeding 100 ml, after separation from hand luggage and dedicated security screening.
Once you have gone through security, there are no restrictions on the purchase of liquids: the shops in the airport provide sealed bags for carrying your purchases until you board your flight.

What items are prohibited?

It is forbidden to carry on board potentially dangerous items (e.g. scissors, knives, files, metal-tipped umbrellas).
It is forbidden to carry any type of gun or bladed weapon, explosives and ammunition in your luggage, unless they are accompanied by a permit issued by the competent authorities.

For further information please see the ENAC Regulations.
