Decarbonization of Air Transport
Decarbonization of Air Transport
Aeroporti di Roma is constantly striving to achieve ever higher levels of environmental sustainability, which is why together with a group of industrial players, institutional stakeholders and associations, led by experts from the academic world, it is part of the Pact for the Decarbonisation of the Air Transport sector, in order to reduce the CO2 emissions produced by its Fiumicino and Ciampino airports.
Air transport produces around 2 per cent of global CO2 emissions and, given its central role in the development of the economy and social fabric worldwide, it is necessary to define a pathway that makes the development of global connectivity and environmental protection compatible. In this perspective, it is necessary to provide concrete answers with a strong scientific basis to a series of questions that the sector must ask itself and to which it must respond as rigorously as possible.
The Pact for the Decarbonisation of Air Transport, born as an Observatory and now a Foundation, has therefore the objective of fostering and accelerating the achievement of aviation sustainability goals in the context of the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda, taking as its reference the goal of Net Zero Emissions by 2050. The Pact gathers and disseminates scientific knowledge by pooling resources and skills from different sectors and academic realities in our country that aim to be an active part of the decarbonisation process. It involves people, associations, interest groups and addresses institutions by stimulating a rigorous debate that integrates the different dimensions of sustainability and the contributions of the various players involved.
