Gelato literally means ‘frozen’ in Italian and the term encompasses an array of frozen desserts, that can include gelato made with milk, non-dairy fruit-based desserts called ‘sorbettos’ or ‘granitas’; as well as ‘semifreddo’ which is served at a warmer temperature and has a mousy yet creamy consistency.

More than just a dessert, gelato in Rome is an art form, since generations of tradition and artistry from master gelato makers have made Rome one of the best places to devour a creamy gelato.
