Airport Carbon Accreditation
Sustainability/Airport Carbon Accreditation
Airport Carbon Accreditation and residual emissions off-setting
Aeroporti di Roma confirms its leadership in sustainability and decarbonization with Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), an international certification developed and managed by ACI Europe (Airport Council International). This program includes different accreditation levels based on the actions taken by an airport to report, reduce and neutralize its CO2 emissions.
Aeroporti di Roma, in order to reduce emissions related to both airport and non-airport activities, joined this certification standard in 2011 and, in 2021, brought both Roman airports to achieve Level 4+, demonstrating its commitment to actively combat climate change. Fiumicino and Ciampino were the first airports in Europe and the third worldwide to reach this important milestone.
To ensure the maintenance of the ACA 4+ certification, Aeroporti di Roma is carrying out a comprehensive decarbonization plan, already launched with numerous initiatives and set to continue over the coming years, with the goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, 20 years ahead of the target set by the European airport sector.
An integrated and certified approach
Our roadmap toward emission reduction includes an integrated and ambitious strategy based on:
- Energy efficiency, certified by ISO 50001, which ensures a structured system for the continuous improvement of energy performance;
- Emission reduction through technological and operational measures (on-site renewable energy production, sustainable mobility, technological innovation and environmental governance);
- Off-setting residual emissions through the purchase of carbon credits compliant with international standards.
Emission Off-setting
In accordance with ACA guidelines, Aeroporti di Roma off-sets the emissions produced by its airports each year through the purchase of carbon credits. This activity adds to the numerous decarbonization measures already implemented, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in the short term, while awaiting the achievement of the Net Zero target by 2030.
The carbon credits purchased by Aeroporti di Roma come from projects approved by ICROA (International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance) and ICVCM (Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market), guaranteeing their quality and integrity. Specifically, they originate from projects considered CCP-Eligible (Carbon Crediting Program Eligible) and from methodologies already approved by ICVCM. This choice demonstrates Aeroporti di Roma’s commitment to exceeding the minimum requirements set by the ACA certification standard and to pursuing climate neutrality in line with best international practices.
Which emissions do we off-set?
Emission off-setting annually covers an amount of emissions greater than the minimum set by ACA, which requires the off-setting of at least the following emission sources:
Scope 1 - Direct controllable sources
Emissions from assets owned and under the organization’s control, such as boilers, generators and company vehicles.
Scope 2 - Purchased energy
Indirect emissions related to the consumption of electricity and thermal energy.
Scope 3 - Business Travel
Indirect emissions resulting from business travel.
Thanks to these actions, Aeroporti di Roma not only complies with ACA standards, but actively contributes to the transition toward a zero-emission future.
Details on the quotas and projects purchased to off-set emissions from Fiumicino and Ciampino airports during 2024 are available in the attached document.
