Founded in 1471 by Pope Sisto IV with bronze statues of the Lateran (the She-Wolf, Boy with Thorn, Camillo and the colossal head of Emperor Constantine with a hand and the orb of power) donated to the Roman people. It is considered the oldest public museum in the world.

Inaugurated in 2007, the Imperial Forums' antique architecture, architectetural decorations and sculptures are displayed through the recreation of some parts of the ancient buildings using original fragments, casts and modular stone integrations.

Inaugurated in 1955, all aspects of ancient Roman civilization are displayed in 59 sections. There is an impressive collection of casts of pieces originally preserved in museums all over the world, but today destroyed or damaged, and plastic replications of monuments spread throughout the breadth of the Roman Empire.

The museum, which occupies almost the entire first floor of the building, houses works of art by both Italian and foreign master artists from the XVI and the XVII centuries, among whom Raphael and Caravaggio.
